a.k.a.  lippia
latin name:  aloysia citriodora

zone: 9
type: tender perennial
light: full sun
height: 36” in colder climates

description:  Very strong and pleasant lemon-scented shrub.  Release aroma when brushed against.  Leaves are very fragrant, lance-shaped, rough to the touch and placed in groups of three around the plant stem.  Tiny white flowers grow on a spike.  Grow in pots and bring plant indoors for the winter.

harvest: The best time to pick the leaves is when the plant goes into flower.  Leaves can be dried and will keep their scent for at least three years if stored in a dark, dry container.

culinary notes:  Leaves make a very nice lemon tea.  The leaves are also used to perfume and sweeten the water in fingerbowls at banquets.  Flavour can be added to sorbets, fruit desserts, oils, and cakes.  Dried leaves can also be used in potpourri and sachets.
